November 2022 I Will Ride Update

I will Ride Logo

Though we are getting closer to wrapping up the year, we continue to move the high-speed rail project forward. This month we have lots of cool scholarships and transportation competitions to share with you. We also have some important updates about construction, international high-speed rail visits and our Small Business Newsletter.

California Transportation Secretary Rides Japanese High-Speed Rail

Collage of three photos. The first photo is inside a train with rows of seating. The second photo is a man standing in front of a train in a platform. The last photo is of a train with a sign that reads N700 Supreme. California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) Secretary Toks Omishakin and other state transportation leaders had the exciting opportunity to ride on high-speed rail earlier this month on an educational trip to Japan. Japan was the first country to debut high-speed rail technology and has enjoyed the benefits of high-speed rail since 1964. Secretary Omishakin rode on the Shinkansen in Tokyo, seeing firsthand the mobility benefits that we’re working hard to bring to California and the United States for the first time ever. We can’t wait for him to ride California’s high-speed rail system! You can see more about his trip on the Secretary’s Twitter posts. All photos were taken from Secretary Omishaken’s Twitter page.

#WonkWednesday on Twitter!

Graphic that has titles that read Vehicles Miles Traveled and #WonkWednesday. The text is over an image of cars in traffic. There is no question that the California High-Speed Rail project is complex! Planning, design and operation of a high-speed rail system is no small task. #WonkWednesday is perfect for those transportation and rail enthusiasts that want to learn more about a specific high-speed rail topic. Earlier this month we focused on Vehicles Miles Traveled (VMT). VMT is the number of miles traveled by vehicles. If 1 person travels 1 mile in car alone, that is 1 VMT. If 255 people travel 1 mile in high-speed rail, that is also 1 VMT! Because the transportation sector is such a large contributor to California’s climate change causing greenhouse gas emissions (well over 40%), reducing VMT in California is a necessary part of the fight to protect our planet. Elementary School Poster Contest – Mineta Transportation Institute

The Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State is hosting a poster contest for students from 1st through 6th grade. That image should encourage, inspire and/or convey a message to others about the theme. Six winners will be selected: Three from grades 1 through 3 and three from grades 4 through 6. This year’s theme is “Rethink Your Ride.” Poster contests are due December 5th!

Each team will receive $100 to help with project expenses.

Sponsored by the US Department of Transportation, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and other industry partners, this program engages students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through a competition focused on sustainable transportation.
