The high-speed rail station in Los Angeles will be located at Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS) in the downtown area with connections to local, regional and national transit services.

In April 2020, the California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) Board of Directors approved a preliminary funding plan with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) to move the Link Union Station project (Link US) forward in Southern California. The funding plan details the release of $423 million in Prop 1A funds for the first phase of the Link US project featuring “run through” tracks crossing over the US-101 freeway. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlines funding, through State, local, federal grants legislative action and private entities, and areas of cooperation and coordination between the Authority and LA Metro, with the goal of completion of the project prior to the 2028 Olympics.

In January 2019, LA Metro issued a Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Link US project. The proposed project will transform LAUS from a “stub-end tracks station” into a “run-through tracks station” with a new passenger concourse that would improve the efficiency of the station and accommodate future growth and transportation demands in the region.

The Authority executed a contract with LA Metro in May 2016 to fund a share of Link US project development costs and in 2017 the Authority’s Board of Directors approved up to $18 million to help fund engineering and technical studies, and to environmentally clear a range of investments to help modernize and integrate high-speed rail at LAUS. The Authority plans to build on the successes to date and will continue to work with regional partners to direct the remaining $423 million Southern California MOU funds to Link US.

The Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) project has goal of being an improved passenger rail corridor that could be electrified and shared with high-speed rail.

The City of Los Angeles, LA Metro and the Authority are working together to ensure the services at LAUS serve downtown Los Angeles and surrounding communities. This joint effort will guide the improvements associated with high-speed rail in order to promote economic development, encourage station accessibility, and enhance regional mobility.
